National Curling Day, 15th November 2021

Get Ready For National Curling Day!

Scottish Curling, together with the Scottish Ice Rink Association, are planning a celebration of our sport on the 15th November 2021.

This is the first time we’ve ever done anything like this, and we are really excited!

This event was proposed and received warmly at our Development Webinars in March. We’ve picked this date, in consultation with rinks, as it represents 1511; the date inscribed on the oldest curling stone in the world. It also falls early in the season, allowing us to raise the profile of the sport, a full 3 months before the start of the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing.

It is borne out of a desire to showcase all the fantastic aspects of curling, after a prolonged time off ice due to the COVID Pandemic. The event will run alongside a wider refresh of our TryCurling.com brand, which includes a radio campaign and a targeted social media campaign.

Mike Ferguson, Chair of SIRA says:

‘’ On behalf of The Scottish Ice Rinks Association and as an ice rink owner I am delighted to be working with Scottish Curling to help promote National Curling Day on 15th November, 2021. The sport has been hit hard by the COVID Pandemic and now as ice rinks re-open it is important everyone pulls together to attract new faces on to the ice. With a national campaign promoting the sport to a wide audience I sincerely hope we can attract all ages and abilities through our ice rink doors. Through our combined efforts I am certain we can make this our #seasonofrecovery and put curling back in its rightful place as an inclusive sport for all to enjoy.’’

National Curling Day is an awareness raising event, not a participation event.

In partnership with ice rinks, Scottish Curling will be approaching local and national media for coverage, and featuring a host of amazing curling stories on our website in the run up to the 15th November.

Please look out for these, and like, comment and share on social media if you are able.

Rinks may also choose to host an event, invite a local celebrity and contact local press, as part of their celebrations.

TryCurling.com Refresh Campaign

After a season like no other, we recognise much work is needed to attract new members to the ice.

As we look to the future, the Scottish Curling Board is investing in a radio campaign on the Bauer Network (Clyde 2, Forth 2, MFR 2, Westsound FM, Northsound 2, Tay 2 ), as part of the refresh of our TryCurling.com initiative.

This will run from 25th October – 22nd November.

The investment is also being used to make TryCurling.com easier to use, to support attendees and rinks alike.
A new safety video is in production, which will be emailed to participants in advance of their first session, saving time and helping create a full and rounded experience, one they’ll want to repeat!

Our Try Curling Coaches are receiving extra training, ready for the influx of new curlers this Winter Olympic and Paralympic season brings.

Finally…

National Curling Day is an opportunity to revel in the many benefits being involved in curling brings, the social aspect, the competition, the physical and mental wellbeing.

We will be featuring a series of fantastic curling stories from across Scotland on our website from 8th – 15th November, culminating in a video on National Curling Day entitled ‘Why I Curl…’.

Please look out for this content and share if you are able. Members can also share their own curling stories, for example: What attracted you to the sport? How do you benefit from being involved? The 15th November is a chance to tell these stories and let your experience shine, and remember to use the hashtags above so we can see and share your stories, too.

Members can also spread awareness among friends and family and ask them to listen out for our Try Curling content across the Bauer Network.

Thank you so much for your support as we emerge from the Covid Pandemic stronger, and ready to grow.

Best Wishes,
The Scottish Curling Team
